Ep. 22. “Ireland’s Quest for Nuclear Power”

4Sep

Ireland's Quest for Nuclear Power started in the 60's.  Planning permission was applied for by the ESB(The electricity Supply Board)   around  1974 to build 4 nuclear reactors at Carnsore point in Co. Wexford , Ireland . The reactors  were never built and were met with huge public and political objection and  eventually the idea of Ireland as a producer of Nuclear Power was scuppered. Finally the Irish government signed a bill in 1999 banning the production of Nuclear power in Ireland . A new lobby group called "Better Environment from Nuclear Energy" or BENE.IE was formed and they continue to try and educate and persuade the Irish Government and people of Ireland why Ireland should consider becoming a Nuclear Energy producer.  With Chernobyl moving to distance of our minds the Pro Nuclear lobby in Ireland were gaining some traction debating the climate change argument and clean air Option Nuclear power offers and Dwindling supply of fossil fuels and pressing the Irish public  to re think the possibility of becoming a Nuclaer generating country .  In 2011 the Fukushima meltdown is another major set back to the Irish Pro Nuclear lobbyists  and fresh reminder to the Irish public as to why the country rejected the idea in the first place back in Ireland in the 1970's
